Innovative Girl's Singlet
Saylor's Story
I thought of designing a singlet specifically to help women and women’s wrestling because it is one of the fastest growing sports right now and I thought to myself boys have their singlets so why don’t girls have their own too?
I was constantly fighting the boy singlets when wrestling. The length of the legs were very uncomfortable, they were always too long. My mom or dad would have to help me roll them up to make the singlets look decent, not be down to my knees and not get in the way while I wrestled. The crotch area was obviously made for a guy too and let’s be honest, it would always ride up giving me and other girls camel toes and that’s uncomfortable for everyone. Then when it was that time of the month and we had our periods whether heavy flow or light flow we constantly had to worry about leaking through the singlet in the middle of a match. Also, the upper half never fit our chests no matter what size and whoever put a cup in one of the singlets I tried well they aren’t meant to fit that. Overall singlets are made for a boy’s or men’s wrestling not a for a girl and I got tired of trying to fit my body and needs into a boy’s singlet.
I wanted to fix these problems because women's wrestling is just as important as men’s and is growing faster than any other sport ever. I knew the problems I had were the same that every girl was facing. I asked my parents “why isn’t there a singlet made for women that will help their performance and make them feel comfortable while they wrestle?” While in a wrestling match you don’t really care about it, but viewers see everything and not to mention all the pictures being taken. So I thought to myself “why not have a singlet that you don’t have to worry about and be able to focus on kicking ass?”
So that’s what I did. We started cutting singlets to find a better fit. We talked about how to re-enforce the singlet in the areas girls need the most support. We sewed in fabric to see how it would feel and look and ultimately made my singlet that I’m super happy about.
My new singlet makes me feel comfortable and covered while I'm wrestling and don’t have pinching arm holes, long legs I’m constantly pulling up or a crotch that rides up leaving me exposed. I can perform on the mat and not focus on anything other than wrestling.
I see my new women’s singlet helping so many other girls and women in performance too. Like I said, having a singlet fit your body like it should is just more comfortable. Not having to worry about things like “oh is my chest out”, “do I have a camel toe” or “did I leak through and is it visible?” Having to think about this during a match is not fair as your focus should be on your wrestling match and not your singlet failing you. With this new women's singlet you don’t have to worry about any of that. More protection in the crouch, the main cut of the singlet is made for a woman’s body and it’s comfortable making it easier to focus on your match because you don’t have to worry about any of that stuff.
I hope my new singlet allows you to feel more comfortable while you wrestle, more comfortable about your body and that you never have your performance affected again by a singlet made for a boy. I hope my singlet gets to every girl that wrestles so that our sport grows and that girls never will wear a boy’s singlet again. So put it on and go kick ass and let’s make girl’s wrestling the biggest sport ever!
